Sierra Service Project

From June 29 - July 6 St. Mary's middle and high school youth will go to the Spokane Indian Reservation, outside of Spokane, Washington to respond to God's call to serve others. The majority of the work they will do for the Spokane Tribe is for elders in Wellpinit, Ford, and West End. The type of work includes building wheelchair ramps, stairs, awnings, porches, wood sheds and other general home repairs. Our work will result in safer, drier, and more comfortable homes and community centers. But more importantly, through the Sierra Service Project, our youth are invited into a closer relationship with God and one another through the transformative power of community. Save the date for Sunday, July 14th at 10 am when the youth will share their experience during the sermon.

Education for Ministry

We are recruiting fun people!

Have you ever tried to read the Bible from cover to cover? Not so easy, is it?

An absolutely terrific group of about ten St. Mary’s parishioners gathers every Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 during the school year to read and discuss the Old and New Testaments, one book at a time, as well as Christian history and theology.

We begin each meeting by talking about “God moments” we’ve experienced during the prior week and then discuss our readings for about 45 minutes. After a delicious snack break, one of us leads a discussion called a theological reflection on a topic that can vary from biblical to moral to questions such as: what do we think of the idea of a white person collecting black dolls? These discussions are always interesting. We close the evening with a very brief worship service. Once or twice each year we watch a movie that is spiritually inspiring. Recent titles include “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and “The Shack”.

The best thing about these sessions is how much we enjoy each other’s company – lots of laughs and good humor as well as serious discussion. To be fair, I should note that there is homework to do for each week, and it typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The good news is that it’s always interesting!

We call our class EfM – Education for Ministry – and we are led by Malcolm Mackenzie and Barbara Phillips Barrett. It’s a four year program. First year students focus on the Old Testament. During the second year, we discuss the New Testament, and during the third year we talk about the history of Christianity from Abraham to Pope Francis. Fourth year students read and discuss introductory books on theology.

if this interests you, please call Malcolm Mackenzie at 337-2529 or Denny Olmsted at 287-6166. Please join us – we’d love to have you do so!

God’s Peace!

Denny Olmsted

An Invitation From Education for Ministry

Education for Ministry (EFM) is pleased to invite you to join us as we continue to learn from our neighbors from the Abrahamic Religions. This year we have invited Awess Lodhi, a member of the American Muslim Society of Napa. Mr. Lodhi will speak to us about the Muslim Holy tradition of Ramadan. There will also be time for questions and answers.

The evening will take place on Monday, April 22nd at 6pm in Turnbull Hall. Coffee and a light snack will be available.

This event allows St. Mary’s and the members of EFM to continue a dialogue with other faith traditions in our community. You may recall that last year we hosted Rabbi Goldstein from Congregation Beth Shalom who walked us through a Seder meal.

We are excited for this opportunity and we are grateful to the American Muslim Society of Napa for their participation.

If you have any questions, please ask Deacon Don

Guest Preacher

One of the first teams on the scene to help people of Incarnation Church in Santa Rosa after the 2017 fires was from Episcopal Relief and Development. I learned this at the Diocesan Convention last November. And I learned a lot more. There is a national Episcopal Asset Map that is used to help disasters all over the US. We could be part of this. ERD also helps congregations with disaster preparedness.  Please join us for a listening session after the 10 o’clock service on March 24th with Sean McConnell to learn more about this.  Sean is Senior Director of Engagement for ERD and will also be preaching at the 8 and 10 o’clock services that day. St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef and Cabbage

This year St. Pat’s is on Sunday, March 17th and so we will be having our annual mission trip fundraiser after church, at 11:30am.  If you prefer to eat your corned beef for dinner, we will provide meals to go. Tickets are $25 per person, and $10 for children 11 and under.  Tickets will be on sale March 2nd through March 13th.  Regretfully, we will not be able to sell tickets after the 13th because we need an accurate headcount as we purchase product based on ticket sales.  This event supports our summer mission trip. This summer St. Mary’s will participate in the Sierra Service Project (SSP), Mission Trip Program.  We will be taking our youth to the Spokane Indian Reservation, outside of Spokane, Washington, to respond to God’s call to serve others. For many, a mission trip can be a life-changing experience.  Your support provides the opportunity for youth to develop a closer relationship with God and one another through the transformative power of community.  Thank you!
